This morning I had the honor of practicing my yoga with some women at The Boulder County Jail.
I often feel deep respect and gratitude toward the women I meet there. I try to have empathy toward their situation. It makes me grateful for the sunshine and fresh air. For freedom.
Yet today during our check in I shared that I was tired and feeling a need to slow down.
One of the inmates said I needed to get locked up to get some rest! She said it's harder to practice yoga out there than it is in here!
Talk about a matter of perception and taking advantage of being in the moment and living fully present.
She reminded me that a lot of people pay a lot of $ for retreats to "get away from it all." We pay to go to places where we share baths and get roomed with folks we don't know, eat what they feed us, are deprived of cell phones and TV's and all our typical stimulation.
We go where it's quiet and still, and we have a choice to be there.
This woman is a true yogi. If she can take her current situation and make something of it then she is sharing in a mastery that all of us "on the outside" are seeking.
